Alexandra S. Matthews, DO

FELLOWSHIP TRAINED SPORTS MEDICINE SPECIALIST

Fellowship-trained in sports medicine and board certified in family medicine with the added qualification of Sports Medicine, Dr. Alexandra S. Matthews is trained in the treatment of athletic injuries and injury prevention for athletes and active individuals at all levels.

Dr. Matthews grew up in Topeka, Kansas. She attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa where she received an undergraduate degree in sociology. After working in Greece for a year, she went on to earn her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Rocky Vista University of Osteopathic Medicine, in Parker, Colorado. Her residency in family medicine was completed at Texas A&M University, in Bryan, Texas. Working under the Sports Medicine Association of San Antonio, she completed her sports medicine fellowship in the Christus Health Santa Rosa Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

Dr. Matthews has been on the clinical staff of the San Antonio Rock and Roll Marathon serving as Assistant Medical Director, and also served as team physician for the Trinity University and Johnson High School football programs. She has provided medical outreach in Nepal and supported Spain’s Club Barcelona in their sports medicine clinic.

Dr. Matthews has contributed to and authored numerous scientific posters and publications, and is currently involved in quality improvement and research projects. She is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Osteopathic Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Matthews and her husband welcomed a second child at the end of 2023, and now have two sons. She is a dog lover and has a bull mastiff. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, scuba diving, working out, and time with family.
